"Eden on EOS emerged out of an idea for a blockchain-based governance solution. As nimble as EOSIO technology is, its near zero-cost, high speed transactions must contend with incentivized block production. A larger EOS mainnet likely faces less issues (e.g. collusion) since block production would be more competitive."
The First Draft and Roadmap
An Eden draft for community governance began circulating in March 2021. What came to be known as a sort of genesis convention got underway in April. This includes:
Keep in mind that governance is the central theme of Dan Larimer’s book More Equal Animals. It's here where initial thoughts about a blockchain governance solution matured. EdenOS flows directly from the book.
Definitions
Below you’ll find a few definitions to help better understand Eden:
EdenOS - programming that underlies Eden on EOS; EdenOS can be applied to other blockchain-based governance applications
Eden on EOS - EdenOS adopted for the EOS mainnet
Eden - abbreviation often used to refer to Eden on EOS
Chief Delegates (CDs) - uppermost council of elected individuals with a head chief delegate (Satoshi) randomly selected among them; these are the keyholders of Eden on EOS and its assets
The Vision
EdenOS is the vision of a new governance standard based on blockchain. Fractal democracy is detailed in Dan’s book. EOSIO is leveraged (alongside EdenOS) to ensure that every member has a say in how leaders are selected. It’s through elected delegates that the EOS mainnet is governed. The result is a drastic improvement over the pitfalls of centralized-acting block producers (BP).
Keep in mind that EOS has many BPs. However, only the top 21 (as voted in by stakeholders) produce blocks and sign smart contracts. Adding to issues is that a two-thirds majority can consolidate to influence decisions.
If the EOS mainnet were better distributed, competition would make collusion substantially more expensive. A fractally elected leadership selected by Eden members meeting face-to-face drastically improves the mainnet environment.
Eden is much more than just EOS though. It’s a model for better human governance. It means fair governance that’s resilient even at a local level.
Eden Development Timeline
Like one might study the history of a nation in preparation to vote in a traditional election, knowing how Eden came into existence has value. Below is a timeline of Eden’s development:
Announcement of EdenOS follows the communication protocol ClarionOS
First fractal democracy roundtable
Next test election scheduled for July 17
100 members reached
Eden Block Producer
Second (unofficial) Satoshi
EdenOnEOS Fulfills a Blockchain Mission (article)
First EOS Foundation (ENF) grants
First official election scheduled for October 9
First official Chief Delegates chosen by 182 participants
Dan Larimer interviews Head Chief Delegate Aaron Cox
EOS Support supports Eden and the EOS mainnet (election pitch deck)
Roadmap and progress report
Final meeting of first term CDs
Second official Eden on EOS election results
First meeting of second term CDs
Discussion of fractally (rebranded from ClarionOS) technology used for Eden elections
Eden Creators announced
Bylaws ratified
The above timeline culminates early in the term of the second body of Chief Delegates. This is a key point in EdenOnEOS history. It marks the official adoption of the first bylaws.
